Strap in the Lookout to your car seat using your seat belt.
Imagine the
Lookout as a small "chair" sitting on your car seat. You do
not need the shoulder part of your seat belt; just use the lap part.
In this process the shoulder part can go wherever it naturally will fall. In some cases it may actually have enough "purchase" on
the "back of the chair" part of the Lookout to hold that too. But
the lap part is the important part.
The lap part of the seat belt
goes around the "waist" of the chair, just as it would around a
person. The Lookout has V shaped grooves cut at the lap part where the back of the chair meets the seat
(fanny) part of the chair -- or, put another way, grooves between the arms of the
"chair" at the back and the back part of the
"chair."
Your lap seat belt will wrap around the chair like it would a person, if
you fit the belt through those grooves.
We
provide free a connecting strap which joins a harness on your
pet to the seat belt.
Think of the strap
as a leash, with a loop as its handle. The loop handle has a locking clasp. Unclasp it and place it around the lap part of your seat
belt, and relock it. The other end hooks to the harness on the pet. This keeps your pet
relatively safe and
comfortable. If you do not have a harness, please buy one
from your local pet store or from us. See the
Harness page to
size the harness to your pet.
We give one free strap with each
Lookout, two with the Large Size, and sell extra ones
Here. Do not confuse the harness with the strap. You need both.
Note: should your Lookout arrive without the free strap, we will mail
you one, but you can also purchase these at most pet stores, or as a
temporary solution use a nylon cord cut to the length you want and
tied at each end: one end to the 0 ring on the harness, the
other end tied to the lap part of the seat belt.
Console Lookouts, both the car and SUV
versions, install differently, than regular Lookouts that go on a car
seat; see:
How to Install Console Lookouts
Please do use this product with a
Harness. Either buy from us (
Small Dog Harnesses ) or your local pet store.
Please, always remember a pet, not
being human, will never be able to react as humans do in
cases of sudden stops and accidents to protect themselves.
But, this is safer than leaving them un-strapped and un-harnessed.
