articles. Click the Link. Progressive Animal Welfare Society - As of 2010 no longer in business Animal Protection Institute (API) - Investigative Report Fact Sheet. This is an old report from 2002, no longer available evidently. API , as far as we can tell, was a neutral "watchdog" institute for the pet food industry. Not obliged or indebted to anyone. They are no longer in business but we have reprinted the 2002 Report together with its sources/references. Although this source is old it is very thorough. Is Premium Dog Food Really Better? Yes ! And Cheaper to Feed in the long run. Details were published about 5 years ago in Good Dog Magazine but we cannot find that article anymore online. In essence it said: you will serve smaller portions of premium for the pet's nutritional needs, plus you will have less poop to clean up. BEAR IN MIND: Each breed is different, each pet is an individual. Many are finicky as to what they will eat, and react to, health-wise. You might have to "buy and try" from the brands recommended by the researchers, to find "The 1, 2 or 3" your pet will eat and react well to; but at least with this resource you have a starting and finishing point for truly great pet food. Whole Dog Journal seems to provide the best list of acceptable good dog food brands. The most recent List we have is at Right. Whole Dog Journal seems to provide the best overall, comprehensive list of acceptable good dog food brands. Its research is thorough, and it gives manufacturers' website addresses. The list is at the bottom of this column and is alphabetized so don't think the ones at the top are the best and the ones at the bottom the worst. Some 4 to 6 star recommendations not on Whole Dog Journal's List, but very highly recommended by others, like Dog Food Analysis and Progressive Animal Welfare Society are :

If a manufacturer's line is listed, as a rule, from the magazines comments, it is implied that all the food lines/foods they have would make the approved list.
