JUST
A NOTE: Veterinarians
agree that pets are living longer, healthier lives since the use of
commercially prepared pet foods became widespread.
Decades of
research have gone into the development of pet food to make sure the
special nutrition needs of pet dogs and cats are met. Source:

6 Main Resources -
Results at Right and
on the
Analysis Continuation
Page
Whole Dog
Journal
- (not free, click the link to learn access) Best Overall Resource: each year gives a list of good dog food brands. Detailed, thorough. Lists ingredients and gives website addresses for manufacturers. Just stick with it. Lists each food's ingredients.
Dog Food Analysis
- (free- click the link, and then see: "CLICK HERE TO SEE THE REVIEWS").
Very Particular, Detailed, Finicky Resource: rates Premium Dog Foods from 6 stars to 2 stars. Lists each food's ingredients, with comments/judgment.
Good
Dog Magazine - (not free, click the link to learn access) Timely Information Throughout the
Year: reports on many subjects, including Dog Food.
Progressive Animal Welfare Society
(as of 2010 this site no longer seems to rate pet food, when it did it was - Strict and Different). Rated pet foods on a Scale of 1-10
(10 is high); 9-10 for food in the wild eaten by your pet in his wild state; 8 for food you
cook/make for your pet. Commercial pet foods were all rated 7 and lower. On
the analysis continuation page are Brands that at one time were rated at 6-7 and therefore, "acceptable."
Animal Protection Institute
(free, click the link) - Investigative
Report/Fact Sheet. Solid report on the pet food industry.
Bottom line: caveat emptor! Do your research before you buy.
Cat Food Reviews (free, click
the link) Very informative, good
resource for rating cat foods, timely information about cat food recalls,
news on
various topics such as dry versus canned cat food.

BEAR IN MIND: Each breed is different, each pet is an individual. Many are
finicky as to what they will eat, and react to, health-wise. You might have to "buy and try" from the brands recommended by the researchers, to find "The
1, 2 or 3" your pet will eat and react well to; but at least with
this resource you have a starting and finishing point for truly great pet food.
Whole Dog Journal
seems to provide the best list of acceptable good dog food brands.
The most recent List we have is at Right and is continued on a following
page. A brand we
recommend -- Natures
Logic -- is not on any of the
lists. It is a relatively new company and it is the first line of pet food in which all categories of products contain 100% food
and excludes all chemically synthesized nutrients. All vitamins, minerals, and trace nutrients found in all
Natures
Logic products are derived 100% from food.

Whole Dog Journal
This list is dated, it's
from 2006 and 2007. Still we find it even today (2010) a reasonably
accurate guide. Most of the major brands stay on the list each year,
some do drop off, and some are added. For example, Nature's Logic
was at one time added, but it is not on the 2006 list. For the latest, you
should visit Dog Food Analysis
which updates its information regularly or subscribe to the Whole
Dog Journal.
The WDJ
seems to provide the best overall, comprehensive list of acceptable good dog food brands.
Its research is thorough, and it gives manufacturers' website addresses. The list
is alphabetized so don't think the ones at the top are the best and the ones at the bottom the worst. ( Whole Dog Journal
's 2006 list is at the bottom, and continued with 2007 additions to the
2006 list here.
Natures
Logic Dog and Cat Food, a brand we recommend, is not on any of the lists. It is a relatively new company. See at left for more information on
Natures
Logic
which excludes all all chemically synthesized
nutrients from its food.
This
Is The 2006 list from the Whole Dog
Journal.
Note, though the list does change each year, these brands
usually continue on it, as others are added. The list is alphabetized so don't think the ones at the top are the best.
These are highest quality foods. If a manufacturer's line is listed, as a rule,
from the magazines comments, it is implied that all the
food lines/foods they have would make the approved list.
This list is continued
with additions from the 2007 Whole Dog Journal
list here; and
note, though the list does change each year, these brands
usually continue on it, as others are added.
