Are some brands really better than others? Is Premium Dog Food Really Better?  Yes, and yes again and it's also less expensive in the long run to feed premium food. Why? You use less of the Premium over time, for greater nutritional value, and in the end, save money. You also have less poop to clean up. Premium saves you money and time, and gives you a healthier pet. WHAT PET FOOD TO GET?  With the pet food poisoning problem in 2007 many pet owners are rightfully concerned whether to trust, who to trust in the pet food industry... We will attempt to answer some of that concern here, with unbiased information .  (Sources)

First you should understand, bad as things seemed with the 2007 recall :  Veterinarians agree that pets are living longer, healthier lives since the use of commercially prepared pet foods became widespread. Decades of research have gone into the development of pet food to make sure the special nutrition needs of pet dogs and cats are met. See  Pet Food ReportA Consumer's Guide to Pet Food: Valuable Information for Pet Owners.

Even So, If you are like us and many others, you are probably confused by all the PET FOOD CHOICES, BRANDS, TYPES,  SIZES,  AND PRICES, and all the iterations for age groups, health conditions.  Dry PET Food or Canned PET Food?  Senior Dog Food, Puppy Food? Special Food for Dry Skin? Special dog food for this AGE OR THAT CONDITION or something other? etc.  ???

We think  EITHER OF THE TWO BRANDS we recommend HAS your answer and neither was/is among the brands recalled in 2007.  See Dog Food Ratings.

That's why we recommend them. You may have your favorite(s), so we offer here a lot of information at various links by which to judge good dog food brands.   At a certain point, choosing the best  food for your pet with all the choices out there becomes a shot in the dark.  A choice none of us almost wants to make.  Too many choices, too many "models" "styles" "sizes."

To help make the choice see: Dog Food Ratings

The maximum life span of dogs and cats is estimated to be 25 - 30 years,  (Sources) but the average pet lives only about 13 -14 years. One out of every four dogs and cats in the western world is now obese. Like humans, dogs and cats that are obese run a higher risk of developing diabetes, heart disease, or other health problems. Obesity is a major health concern in humans and our pets, shortening life. Diet and exercise are the key components for overcoming the problem. Sources

These two brands make the diet part - choosing a pet food - simple. Nature's Logic, and Breeders Choice,  have taken a Natural food and Holistic approach to pet nutrition. We do not recommend one over the other. We do believe both have great products, with natural ingredients that provide a balanced and wholesome diet for your dog or cat.  And at a reasonable price.

Rest assured: you will make the right diet choice with either Breeders Choice or Natures Logic.  Learn more at:   Natures Logic   Breeders Choice

WHY Breeder's Choice or Nature's Logic?

This is a short explanation of a very complicated subject on pet nutrition. We are not veterinarians, nor doctors, nor pet nutrition experts.  However, what we explain below we have gathered from a lot of reading on the subject. (Sources)
In their natural state, dogs and cats are carnivores.  Which means, simply that they eat meat. Well actually, dogs are omnivorous, not just carnivores, but still are mainly meat eaters. But mostly cats and dogs eat meat from prey.  That prey may be small rodents, rabbits, squirrels, or birds, or larger mammals or fish. That leads many of us to think they need only meat or that meat should be the most important part of their diet. That is very true for cats and also to a lesser extent, for dogs.   Dogs eat almost anything.  Also, even when the carnivore eats prey, he eats all of it, or as much as he can: to be plain, and perhaps unpleasant,  not just the flesh, but also the bones, the stomach, other organs, and the blood. In those other organs, including the blood and the stomach, he consumes nutrients from any plant food the prey ate, and sometimes eats undigested plants.  In the wild, dogs also commonly supplement their meat diet with fruits, berries, roots, and honey when they can.

From the foregoing you can see that plant nutrition is a part of the dog or cat's diet in the wild. It is important for balance.
When we were young our Mother fed the family dogs from table scraps. Today it is generally accepted that this represents an unhealthy, and un-balanced pet diet. And that's probably true, if you take the diet of many Americans today which is very heavy on meat and animal fat. And scraps are just that, remainders of what we did not eat, but they did get vegetables as well as meat from the scraps.  Perhaps in some ways it was healthier than some commercial pet foods made today, though not balanced.
Also, some doctors, and nutrition experts will tell you that a synthetic vitamin or mineral in a pill or added to food, is as good for you as natural vitamins and minerals found naturally in the food. Others will tell you that is not so. That you get more from eating the actual food. We don't know who is right, but in that lack of knowledge, would think eating a healthy diet of colorful and varied plant food and meat makes for a healthy diet, human or pet.  In pet food this is sometimes called a Holistic Approach to Pet Nutrition.  A holistic approach focuses on preventing disease, for which complete, balanced, sound nutrition is essential. Natural foods, carefully chosen are the basis of  this approach. Sources
